How to turn on closed captions on a Roku
Roku can show closed captions (subtitles) system-wide or only while something is playing. Here's both.
Turn captions on everywhere
- Press Home, then go to Settings › Accessibility › Captions mode (on older software, Settings › Captions mode).
- Choose On always to show captions whenever they're available, or On replay to show them only when you rewind.
Toggle captions for the current show
While a video is playing, press the Star/Options button on the remote and turn Closed captioning on or off right there. You can also adjust caption text size, color, and background under Settings › Accessibility › Caption style.
FAQ
- Why don't captions show on some shows?
- Captions depend on the channel and the specific title providing them. If a show has none, the setting can't display them — try the channel's own subtitle option during playback.
