Does a Roku work without internet?

A Roku needs the internet for streaming apps, but the device isn't useless offline. Here's what still works with no Wi-Fi.

What works offline

• HDMI inputs — a game console, Blu-ray player, cable box, or PC connected to an HDMI port plays normally.
• Antenna TV — Roku TVs with a built-in tuner can watch over-the-air channels (note: a recent change may require a one-time online setup).
• USB media — many Roku models play video and music from a USB drive using the Roku Media Player.

What needs the internet

• All streaming channels (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and the rest).
• First-time setup — activating a new Roku requires going online once.
