How to set up a new Roku TV
Setting up a Roku takes about ten minutes: connect it, get it online, and link your account. Here's the flow.
Step by step
- Plug in the Roku (and for a streaming stick, connect its power adapter) and select your HDMI input if needed.
- Choose your language and connect to your Wi-Fi network.
- Let it download the latest software and reboot — this is normal.
- Follow the prompts to link a free Roku account (needed to add channels).
- Once you're on the home screen, put your phone on the same Wi-Fi and open Roly to control the TV — great for typing your logins.
Tip: skip the on-screen keyboard
Entering Wi-Fi passwords and account logins with a D-pad is slow. Connect the Roly app and use your phone's keyboard instead.
FAQ
- Do I need a Roku account?
- Yes — a free Roku account is required to activate the device and add channels. You can create one during setup or beforehand on Roku's website.
- Can I set up a Roku without the remote?
- The first-time setup screens are easiest with the included remote. Once the Roku is online, the Roly app can take over as a full remote.
